The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is the Nation's primary agency for cancer research. It leads the nation's fight against cancer by supporting and conducting research in cancer biology, causation, prevention, detection, treatment, and survivorship. The NCI also supports cancer centers, community-based clinical oncology programs, education, and outreach programs.

 

The Cancer Information Service, a national information and education network, is a free public service of the NCI. The CIS provides the latest, most accurate information on cancer, interpreting and explaining research findings in a clear and understandable manner. The CIS may be reached at 1-800-4-CANCER, Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or visit them online at www.nci.nih.gov.

The NCI's web site also provides comprehensive information about cancer by covering topics such as treatment options, clinical trials, coping with cancer, support and resources, and cancer literature. It also contains a link to PDQ, a cancer information database.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service. The ACS maintains a toll-free information hotline (number listed above) available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The ACS, Mid-Atlantic Division's toll-free number, 1-888-ACS-NEED, connects you with one of two local field Resource Centers who can provide comprehensive and current information about ACS programs and services, as well as community resources and information.

The ACS's National web site is a comprehensive site containing valuable resources on prevention and risk factors, detection, treatment methods, and services for cancer patients and their families. Practical information, ideas, answers to common questions and tips are available by selecting "Services and Resources" under "Patient Services" on the right side of their homepage. For specific resources in your community, select your state of residence under the word "Community" on the right side of their homepage. Specifically covering pediatrics, there is a section of their site called The Cancer in Children Resource Center. It may be accessed by selecting "Children and Cancer" on the left side of the homepage.
