Little Red Caboose

Little red caboose – chug, chug, chug
Little red caboose – chug, chug, chug
Little red caboose behind the train, train, train
Smokestack on his back, back, back, back
Goin’ round the track, track, track, track
Little red caboose behind the train

Little red caboose behind the train, train, train
Smokestack runnin’ circles in my brain, brain, brain
Little red caboose – chug, chug, chug
Little red caboose – chug, chug, chug
Little red caboose behind the train

(Feelin’) Special Love

I’ve been sick since I don’t know when
Never thought I’d ever smile again
These needles stickin’ into me
They call it chemotherapy
I was up on the 13th floor*
Walkin’ up and down that corridor
Wonder when they’re goin’ let me out
That’s when I found out all about

Feelin’ a Special Love – Special Love Inc.

Told myself I need a change of pace
And so I went and found a better place
Things were getting’ just a little bit drastic
Until I got to go to Camp Fantastic
This place it got a hold on me
And so I brought back all my family
Father, mother, brother, sister, too
There’s something here for every one of you!

It’s waitin’ for you, can’t you see
For when you need a change of scenery
Doesn’t matter what you need
Your satisfaction’s guaranteed
Doesn’t matter if you’re feeling numb
They been there too and they know where you’re comin’ from
Come on over and then you’ll truly
Feel a whole lot happier, you’ll be

No Mo Chemo

The day the doctor said to me
You've got cancer with a capital 'C'."
I asked him, "Doc, what can be done?"
And he gave me a bottle of rat poison.
He said, "Take this medicine twice a day,
And then your cancer will go away."
Well I've been gettin' this crap for years
And it was music to my ears to hear

No mo chemo, not for me
I finished chemotherapy
The doctor tells me Lord willin'
I'll never need this stuff again!

I took these drugs and my hair fell out
I didn't have much to smile about
I didn’t have time for growin' up
‘Cause I was much too busy throwin' up
My mouth got sore and my eyes grew red
And I developed this pounding in my head
But I got through it, yessiree
Because my doctor just told me

He said "No mo! No mo! No mo! Chemo!"
He said, "No mo! No mo! No mo! Chemo!"

A friend of mine found out today
His cancer hasn't gone away
They're gonna start his drugs again
Well this is what I told my friend, I said
Hang in there 'cause when you're through
The doctor will be telling you
That you've been cured and then you'll see
You'll be singin' along with me

BRASS Theme

My folks came to me yesterday
And tried to think of what to say
It seems my brother he ain’t well
And they put him in the hospital
He’s gonna take his medicine everyday
Until his illness goes away
But he won’t go through it by himself
‘Cause I am gonna be there to help
I’m joining

Top BRASS! Brothers and Sisters standing tall
Top BRASS! ‘Cause we’re all for one and one for all
Top BRASS! Bein’ there for our siblings, yo
Top BRASS! And helpin’ through it, don’t you know

So if you’re feelin’ kinda sad
Because your brother’s feelin’ bad
Or if your sister’s in a rut
That’s no excuse for giving up
Just listen to what I’m telling you
There’s lots of things that you can do
And won’t your sibling be surprised
When we decide to mobilize
We’re calling – Top BRASS!

Camp Fantastic Rap

When I’m down, and feel low
There’s somewhere that I wanna go
A place made for me
Where the people are nice and they adore me
A haven, where I wanna be
For some peace and tranquility
Fresh air, a little sun
A few friends and a whole lotta fun, it's

Camp FANTASTIC! (Here we go!)

My mom, and my dad
They think about how much fun I’m gonna have
And they say, “Can we go?”
But I just smile and I say “No!”
I’m goin’ camping, like you did
But together? Now don’t be stupid
Relax, I’m not a baby
I’ll see you in a week – yeah, maybe

Now here are some things, for you to remember
When you go home near September
A few smiles, some kind words
‘Cause bein’ sick is for the birds
But don’t you, get down
Or depressed ‘cause I’m not around
Sing yourself this little tune
And think about me, ‘cause I’ll see you soon

Camp Fantastic (I'm a Special Kid)

I wanna go to a place that puts a smile on my face
And leaves me feelin' great
I wanna lie in the sun, I wanna have me some fun
I wanna stay up late
'Cause those are all the things I like to do
And I am going to a place where I am someone, too!

Camp Fantastic, it's the number one place around
Camp Fantastic, it's the cure for when I'm feelin' down
Camp Fantastic, it's the best thing I ever did
It's a special place and I'm a special kid!

Ain't gonna worry 'bout meds, don't want no hospital beds,
Gettin' in my way
There's lots of things I can do, and time to fit 'em in, too
Because we got all day
Well this place makes me wanna laugh and shout
'Cause that's what being young and growing up is all about! (Chorus)

And now you know where I stand, and you can bet that I plan
To come back again
And if I start feelin' blue, I'm gonna think about you
And just how fun it's been
Well Mom and Dad I sure have had a ball
So don't be too surprised if I just don't come home at all!
You can find me at - Camp Fantastic!

A Favorite Place of Mine

Camp Fantastic and Special Love
They’re the kind of fun you never get enough of
Times been tough but they’re gonna be fine
It’s a favorite place of mine

Well I’ve been sick, and I’ve been sad
I’ve felt blue, and I’ve felt bad
I was battling on my own
‘Til I found a little place that’s known (by the name of)

Well I’ve been bummed, and I’ve been bald
I’ve felt shunned and I’ve felt small
Cancer sucks, everybody knows
There’s a remedy and it goes (by the name of)

Let’s hear the drums now!

Swing Low

Swing low, sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home

I looked over Jordan and what did I see
Coming for to carry me home
A band of angels coming after me
Coming for to carry me home

Sometimes I'm up and sometimes I'm down
Coming for to carry me home
But still my soul feels heavenly bound
Coming for to carry me home

If you get there before I do
Coming for to carry me home
Tell all my friends I'm coming too
Coming for to carry me home

Dave's Notes:

Little Red Caboose was one of the first songs I ever taught at campfire. Few people in recent years realize it originally had a melody (some will listen to this CD and insist it still doesn't...)

My son, Andy, insisted on supplying the closing "choo choo, Baby, lightnin'!"

You can hear the "naked," accapella version here.

"No Mo Chemo" was the phrase used by camp parent Rose McGowan to describe the end of her daughter, Colleen's, completion of treatment. It sounded too good to pass up.

Recorded at the studio of a good friend, Randy Rolin. Watch for more collaborations on camp songs in the near future!

The "turbo mix" of this song features "backup rapping" by long-time counselor Michael Bergin (he also uttered the phrase "I wish I could dance" at the beginning of the song, not realizing the microphone
was on...)

The original version (song #11) features a "sample" of the entire 1991 Camp Fantastic crowd yelling "FANTASTIC!" That's where the airy sythesizer sound featured throughout the song comes from, too.

An early song written using three of the only chords I knew on the guitar. Improved upon greatly by Jim Newton of Hugworks.

The "hand jive" version came about as a result of getting
bored playing the original..

Written in response to a board member's comment that "we need a theme song we can sing while we're marching in the Octoberfest parade." I set the tempo while out jogging one day and got lyrical input from former Program Director, Tori Stay, and
drumming help from a
volunteer and former camper,
Malcolm Brewster.

This is our favorite song to close each night's campfire (granted, we sing it in a bit more mellow fashion). We've occasionally fielded the question, "Isn't the song too morbid?" Fearing maybe it was, we stopped singing it one year and met with such unanimous protest that we put
it back in the lineup, where
it has remained ever since.

Final note:
All but one of the songs on this CD feature rhythm and music performed on a Korg M1 keyboard that was presented to me in 2002 by several camp families and volunteers. After recording five of the songs on cassette with limited distribution, I felt it was about time I produced a compilation on CD to show my appreciation. I hope they
(and you) enjoy it!
